Daily Divine: Feeling the energy of Easter

So many of you tell me you were raised Catholic—from the most casual mass-at-Christmas-and-Easter, to the most devout parochial-school-with-nuns-or-priests.

Nowadays, many of you are still Catholic, or not Catholic at all—or maybe you're not really sure where the formal religion of your childhood intersects with your new spiritual beliefs.

I have my own Catholic experience.

I was raised by non-religious parents who sent me to the local convent—which mean nuns wearing dimples,  mass daily, fonts of holy water in the hallway, and statues of St. Frances Assisi everywhere.

Lots of folks didn't have great experiences at Catholic schools, but I did. I converted to Catholicism as an adult, and practiced for many years until my near-death-experience—when everything changed.

In any case, I am familiar with the Easter energy that many of us are feeling now.

Easter Week is hugely emotional: Maundy Thursday is somber and incredibly sad. Good Friday brings hope. Easter Vigil, which begins Saturday night and at the parish I use to attend, included a blazing bonfire, a swinging vessel of incense... and many, many (did I say many?) hours later, the baptism of all new members of the church in water and chrism. Easter begins during the wee hours of the vigil, and continues on till morning.

If you have these Easter memories hardwired into your system, you're going to be feeling stuff this week, whether you want to or not.

Religion has been wonderful for many people.
Religion has wounded many others.
We each have our own experience.
But it all comes back, every spring.

For me, what's best it to acknowledge that the energy swirling around us this week is there, and it affects us.

So just feel it... feel it all... and let your feelings be released.
Then take a look around you.

Today, the  daffodils are out, and very soon the tulips will be here.

Notice everything.
And be in awe.

Much love,
SARA

Sara,

This is so on target and helfpul for me today! I have been drowsy all day yesterday and today and that is not like me. Now I understand it. Also I wasn't able to meditate this morning.

I have always had severe emotional responses to Springtime and Easter, and now it makes sense...

Thank you.

P.S. I even looked into Chinese Medicine and found out that Springtime is the time of the liver and thought maybe that was the problem. :)

Thank you, Amy. Spring is a time that is bursting with energy. Just look at that little bee in the photo! Those flowers! Everything is just ALIVE and ready to go after a long sleep.

We are part of nature, and we feel this giant Wake Up too.

Easter - is the idea of being reborn. The great waking up that is the death of who we were to the birth of who we are going to be Now.

Thank you Sara!! I've been missing the feeling of being included in traditions. I miss the all night masses, to an extent, the camaraderie of the parishioners. Statues etc. I do still go to the Grotto, definitely one of my favorite places to feel God, the Divine to feel "full" is so powerful. Thank you again.

Thank you, Lorena. Yes, the beautiful traditions of many religions affect us deeply - that is what they are meant to do.

They are like a feeling of coming home, even if we are not active in that religion in present time.

And yes... the powerful nature of many souls in reverent state, held in a space like the Grotto, or all the other places.

Ok. I too had a very positive experience of Catholicism growing up. Your brief story intrigues me: but what happened after the near death experience ? A mystery...?

Thank you, Mark. My near-death-experience in 2000 was the beginning my spiritual opening.

I had instantaneous intuitive opening, and then spiritual expansion. Which of course I continue to work on as best I can! :)

This life is a very interesting journey.

If you're interested, the whole story is told in my book Writing the Divine.

Again , a thanks for sharing your experiences and its like being able to taste all the dishes brought to a big community night out. maybe recipes passed down from great grandma or the newly found zen recipe and just faves from the ole dependable dog eared chocolate tinted pages of Betty Crocker cookbook or Laurels Kitchen. When we are able to gather here or at a table with expectations of sharing and fellowship every dish and bread broken tastes just right of love. Mix and match and sweet and salty whatever the fave taste it all feeds us. much love and appreciation.
