Not too long ago, Abby joined our household.
She’s an older Lhasa Apso, and her qualities are patience, intelligence and getting along. She is easily able to communicate with us by her actions and in telepathy. That said, when Abby first arrived, our cat Emrys was not a happy camper. Emrys is also sensitive, intelligent and telepathic: I have called him from the far fields many times, simply by thinking him home. But Emrys is easy to get along. Upon the arrival of Abby, there was a lot of hissing and clawing and scratching. There were power plays, posturing, snubbing. When the temperature dropped and it snowed for a week, we moved Emrys inside the house to stay warm, instead of in the shed where he prefers to sleep. Oh, and there was tension in the house! Outside the snow fell in silent beautiful while inside the animals jockeyed for position, and we had to behave like referees, keeping squabbling players from starting a riot. Until one day…. things changed. One day during our enforced retreat, all of us held hostage by the storm... one day, in one unmemorable moment, it all shifted. There was no more argument. Abby and Emrys had come to their agreement: a peaceable kingdom, where two different species agreed to trust… against their DNA, against their genetic history, against all it means to be “dog” and “cat” on this planet. Peace on earth! A small sign perhaps, but a sign nonetheless, that we can in fact learn to get along. Much love, SARA P.S. Register now for small group training this Spring! |
