I had privilege of interviewing Sara Wiseman this week! Spiritual teacher and intuitive Sara Wiseman is author of six insightful books on spirituality and intuition, including Living a Life of Gratitude, Intuition, Cancer & Miracles and Becoming Your Best Self. She hosts the popular radio show Ask Sara, and is a top contributor to DailyOM. She has released four healing music CDs with her band Martyrs of Sound. You can visit her online at www.sarawiseman.com
I hope you enjoy her journey that she shared with us!
Thyselfknown: How did your spiritual journey begin?
Sara Wiseman: I had a near death experience in 2000, and nothing was the same after that! The best way I can describe what happened in that moment, was that I saw God, or understood the Universe, at a deeply intimate level, as part of myself—I suddenly experienced Divine/One/All, all at once. This was the start of a profound journey of transformation, and the beginning of my intuitive opening.
Thyselfknown: What motivates you?
Sara Wiseman: My morning coffee , black and strong! Actually, I think I am motivated most by the people that I work with and teach; I feel great compassion and empathy for the state of the human condition; how confused we can get, and how tormented and how much pain we experience, even in the day to day moments of our lives. When you contrast this with the other way it’s possible to feel: a deep knowing of the mot amazing beauty and light—well, I want to help folks get to that place of awe, peace and joy.
Thyselfknown: What are some things you wish someone would have shared with you early in your spiritual journey?
Sare Wiseman: To bring Power Bars! It’s a long journey; it’s the journey of soul growth over an entire lifetime, however long that is. And there are lots of ups and downs, and you need to rest along the way. It’s not all smooth hiking. Many, many detours and challenges and rocky courses as you make your way toward greater understanding.
Thyselfknown: What are three things you have told yourself to help you get through your darkest hour?
Sara Wiseman: One. Breathe. The breath is the bridge to consciousness. Two. Trust in the guides, angelic beings, saints and holy ones who have supported me from the start. They are always there for all of us. Three. I’m a soul in human body, just like everyone else. So no matter what happens, it’s all okay; we’re infinite beings. This means we can relax into the moment, and appreciate what’s there, right now. Not what’s in future, or whatever fear is in the mind. Just the beauty of what’s happening right now.
Thyselfknown: What is one life memory you recall frequently? How has that memory affected you spiritually?
Sara Wiseman: This is an interesting question, because I don’t spend a lot of time reminiscing. But when I do look at my life as a progression, it’s filled with amazing moments…like a string of beautiful pearls on a necklace. I remember biking around Seattle as a girl; I was very independent as a teen. I recall the gorgeous beauty of my children, and how fun it was when they were little. I recall being in nature and especially near the water: Puget Sound, the Oregon coast, Hawaii, swimming, kayaking, bodysurfing as a kid. I lived in Switzerland and Norway as a kid, and studied in England, and the resonance of the past was incredible. Now, I live in the country and am surrounded by trees; I am aware every day of the blessing of my life, and how rich it has been.
Thyselfknown: You wrote a book called “Intuition, Cancer and Miracles” where you find the gift in this painful experience. How were you able to do that?
Sara Wiseman: I had melanoma, which is very deadly, and it had spread to my lymph nodes. During the surgeries, I soon learned I could not allow myself to descend into fear or panic… instead, when I looked at things from a soul perspective, and really accepted the fact of my own mortality, I experienced a profound shift in my consciousness. The gift isn’t just that I am a survivor, although that is an extraordinary gift! The gift is that I was changed, educated and moved forward into a new level of understanding, because of this experience. I think this soul shift happens to many people who have serious illness, or face serious issues—we wake up.
Thyselfknown: You are the authors of several amazing books. You have a new book coming out called “Living a Life of Gratitude”. Can you tell more about this project?
Sara Wiseman: Oh my gracious! This was one of my favorite books to write! It’s a different style of writing for me—I use 88 vignettes to show gratitude for all experiences, from birth to death and beyond. This allowed me to use a more literary voice, which I really enjoyed. Every person has just such stories in their own lives, and this book helps people to see the various progression and stages of their own experience. You can read the book all at once, or one vignette a day, and answer the questions in journaling or meditation, to help you discover more about yourself. The book is also offered as an audio course.
Thyselfknown: Can you tell us more about your Intuitive Training Program and the other courses you offer?
Sara Wiseman: I’m committed to teaching others how to access what I call spiritual intuition. The folks who follow me seem to be audio aficionados, so I offer a lot of audio courses, and courses on DailyOM. I also have a complete year-long curriculum for intuitive training that takes small groups of cohorts through training from beginning to professional certification. This is offered via distance, so folks can fit it into their busy schedules. Right now we have people in the course from allover the world, including the U.S., Australia and the U.K. For folks who can’t be a part of the intuitive training, I teach every week on my radio show Ask Sara, and offer free podcasts for all of those shows. I like to keep things affordable and available.
Thyselfknown: In the next 3 to 5 years how do you see humans evolving due to the work that you are doing now?
Sara Wiseman: Many people have already evolved to this, and it seems to me that the younger people are, the easier it is for them to do intuitive work. The spiritual part of spiritual intuition takes a bit longer—that comes from experience and consciousness. As for the timeline of three to five years… I’d say that’s a bit optimistic everyone, but many will be there. I do believe we are evolving as humans, and in 50 to 100 years, this (or something even better) will be the norm.
