In western society, it’s common to turn away from our parents in our teens, and to move away permanently from our parents in our 20s and 30s. Not everyone does this, but it’s a common path, a kind of rite of passage.
We seek to find ourselves, outside of our ancestry and our lineage, and of course this is very useful.
However, when we continue to distance ourselves from our parents past a certain age, without doing the work of healing what needs to be healed between us, this can stunt our growth.
At some point in our lives, we need to come to peace with our feelings about our family of origin. We can decide to heal from past angers and hurts; or we can decide to separate fully if there was abuse; or we can take steps to come closer together.
Doing this work is a part of our passage into true adulthood.
When we understand that our family members are souls, just like we are, we can see that these souls also have struggles and deep needs, met or unmet, just like we do.
It’s tempting to play the victim or the rebel or run away from our childhoods. But that doesn’t bring us to great understanding. It’s when we finally work through our family issues, that we become whole.

Sometimes we find ourselves surrounded by people we don’t have anything in common with any more.
Maybe we’ve done a lot of our spiritual work, and they haven’t. Or maybe they’ve been doing more work than we have! Perhaps we’ve been walking on the same path for a long time, but now we’ve reached a corssorads, and we must each go our separate ways.
When you come to the crossroads, there isn’t any point in grasping or hanging on. If relationships are not enjoyable and fulfilling, it makes no sense to cling.
In life, we're always walking through new doors; we’re always expanding into our new Self.
Thus, it’s normal and correct to outgrow people, or to have them outgrow you. It is normal and correct to change.
Don’t be afraid to loosen the ties of relationships that haven't worked for a long time, or that never worked, or that you only continue out of guilt or habit.
Keep growing; don’t get stuck in what once was. Allow the Universe to take you to new experiences, new relationships. Walk through the next door.

It's said that we choose our families: our parents, siblings, cultures, even the time and place we are born into, because our souls have determined that this is where we will learn fastest on our journey of soul growth...
Now, it would be lovely if the family we've landed into is brimming with love and light; a continuous feast of honey and roses. However, for many of us this is not the case.
There are seven karmic shadows written into the history of every family. These shadows are:
In this course, we will take on the task of healing whichever of the seven shadows are in your family, either now or in the past. This is possible no matter how painful your family relationships have been...
When we work in Universal energy, as you will learn to do in this course, you will learn how to correct and heal the karma of your family shadows, both backwards into the past, and forwards into the future.

If you've been paying attention, you've noticed how issues of personal healing have been showing up again, and again... and again... in your life. This may include:
• Family issues you thought you were done with
• Family conflicts ending up in breaks or separations
• Family conflicts that are finally resolving
• Relationship "renegotiations"
• People you've known for a very long time, leaving your life
• People you've known for a very long time, suddenly doing very new things
• A sense of ennui about what you are doing
• A lack of clear direction throughout most of the past month
• Plans not quite working
• Plans not quite being planned
• Wanting to be
• Stillness as the first choice
• Stillness as the second choice!
All of this points to a kind of internal healing that is taking place.
So... it's okay, whatever you're feeling. You're definitely not the only one.
As you work on your own journey, I'm please to offer some low-cost courses for you, to help you in your process:

I don't use the word "tribe" very much in my work. To me, it seems that the word family speaks of the soul cluster we're born into: the one we've been with since childhood. Family is where we work out our karma from distant past and through the generations.
Tribe is what we choose: it's the new family, the true family we seek to create, with people who we share aligned values and understanding with.
But sometimes, if haven't truly worked out our family stuff, tribe is just a false projection: a group we call "us" even though that's not really "us." We're only part of it, or we only fit in that group for a while.
Eventually, we group out of all family, and all tribe, and simply become our selves.
On the plane back from California, I sat by a woman wearing Oregon Ducks gear from head to toe. Her first statement to me was "Are you a Ducks or Beavers fan?" to which I mumbled, "Neither."
When we over align with family, when we over align with tribe, we miss the true aspect of who we are, which is our self as Divine being in earth body. We are each unique, yet even more so, we are soul.
It's a whole different way of looking at who you are, and why you're here.
As Spring Equinox arrives, with its bobbing daffodils and sporadic rains (at least here in Oregon), you are probably working on:
• Family secrets
• Ancesteral kamra
• Inherited traits
• Separating from birth family (regardless of age)
• Discovering your true self
• Rediscovering your true self
• Having compassion for family members
• Setting boundaries with family members
• Understanding we are, at the core, Soul.

Kurt Cobain is not mentioned in this post.
In fact, the subject of this post likely doesn't even know who he is.
There comes a time in every teen's life when they move from the graphic tees section of Old Navy, to the official no-longer-a-preteen section.
That day was today.
Amidst the 4th of July specials we journeyed, looking askance at anything red, white or blue.
Instead the shopper, now 12.75 years, settled on a cardigan and skirt, as previously noticed in Teen Vogue.
If you have every waited in an Old Navy with the disco pop blaring, while said near teen tries on 368 items of clothing, dare we say you have not lived?
And yet... In the end, what was chosen was absolutely perfect for the shopper.
A new match, for an emerging personality. Worth trying on everything that did not fit, did not work.
Such is true for all of us, at every age.
We try on different aspects of ourselves, until we find what is most authentic, what is most interesting, what fits the best.
Well worth the time, the effort.
No matter when we start.
However long the journey takes.
